Ravi Shastri, who was appointed head coach of the Indian team on July 11, will be assisted by Sanjay Bangar (assistant coach), B. Arun (bowling coach) and R. Sridhar (fielding coach) for a period of two years, renewable in July 2018.
This team will begin its work from the tour of Sri Lanka. The Indian team will leave for Colombo on Wednesday evening after a media interaction in the afternoon at a hotel near the international airport.
Shastri is likely to receive around ₹7.5 crore, Bangar (₹2.2 crore), Arun (₹2 crore) and Sridhar (₹1.8 crore) for each of the two years.
Bangar and Sridhar were in-charge of the Indian team during the limited- overs and Twenty20 series in the West Indies, after the ICC Champions Trophy and Anil Kumble’s withdrawal from the interview process for the post of head coach.
Arun, who had worked with the India under-19 team for a number of years and was the bowling coach during Shastri’s first stint with the Indian team as Team Director, was added to the coaching staff at the meeting of the special committee drawn from the BCCI (acting president C.K. Khanna, acting secretary, Amitabh Choudhary and CEO Rahul Johri) and CoA member Diana Edulji.
Shastri, who was at the meeting here on Tuesday, asked for Arun to be appointed bowling coach and it was granted by the committee, getting the nod from CoA chief Vinod Rai.
The entire coaching and support staff have been asked to give declaration that they do not come under the conflict of interest rules. Apart from the cricket-related coaching staff, others who look after the fitness of the team, have also been asked to submit a similar declaration.
While there was clarity on the travelling coaching staff team and their annual pay, there was still some ambiguity with regard to the roles to be given to Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid, both of whom were picked by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), as consultants of bowling and batting for overseas Tests. CAC member Tendulkar also may be added to the team of consultants.
The BCCI is likely to talk to them and may restrict their activity to camps run in India, with the CoA reportedly expressing reservations about their spending some time with the Indian team on overseas tours.
While Dravid now has a full contract with the BCCI as head coach of the India under-19 and ‘A’ teams, Zaheer has to get rid of his agreement with Delhi Daredevils, in order to make himself available for any work with the BCCI.
The special committee and BCCI have also cleared Paras Mhambrey as bowling coach of the India ‘A’ team and also given him some NCA role, Tushar Arothe as coach of the women’s team for two years and other staff for the junior teams.
Shastri said that he had spoken to all those being talked of for consultant roles. He said: “I was very clear in my mind what my core team would be.”
