Apparently incommunicado when V.V.S. Laxman tried contacting him before announcing his retirement, the Indian cricket team captain, M.S. Dhoni, paid rich tributes to the veteran batsman, saying that his absence would be felt by the entire team.
“The whole team will miss u VVS. One of the best human beings I have ever met in my life. Spent a lot of time with him while batting and fielding and the chat would always be about the team.
“Will miss him whenever the team cuts cake, personally I will really miss u LACHU BHAI,” Dhoni tweeted.
Meanwhile, tributes poured in for the stylish right-hander with not just cricketers, but athletes from other sports lauding him.
“Thank you for all the memories V.V.S. Cricket world will mourn, Aussie cricket will celebrate,” tweeted tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi.
“India will miss V.V.S. Laxman, rock-solid batsman, a great ambassador for cricket & above all, one of the best human beings I have met,” added Olympic silver-medallist shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore. —

With your retirement, Australia will be relieved; fan will miss you and no player representing Indian Team from Hyderabad. Your retirement will bring a big gap and unbalance the Indian batting line up. No doubt there are several youngsters but your experience, talent, dedication and hard work cannot be replaced. Everyone will miss you.
I saw your best innings in Calcutta against Australia and I remember Azharuddin when he scored his first Ranji Trophy hundred against Andhra along with me at Gymkhana ground. You had the same style and elegance and the ease of playing your shots. Wish you a very successful life and hope you enjoyed your game to the best.
