Paying glowing tributes to V.V.S. Laxman, who quit international cricket on Saturday, selection committee chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth on Sunday said that the just-retired batsman should have got more recognition for his match-winning performances for the country.
Laxman on Saturday decided to walk into the sunset with immediate effect despite being picked in the Indian squad for the two-match Test series against New Zealand starting at his hometown in Hyderabad on August 23 and Srikkanth said he respected his decision to retire.
“Laxman is one of the greatest cricketers. He has won so many matches for India. He has won tremendous matches for India from no win situations. He should have got more recognition for his performances. More credit should go to him for his great performances,” Srikkanth told PTI.
“It is all in records as to how he had played in Sri Lanka, Australia and New Zealand. I respect his personal decision and wish him the very best,” he added.
Srikkanth described Laxman as a “gentleman cricketer” and a “person of character”.
“He is the best gentleman cricketer that I have seen. He is a thoroughbred gentleman and soft spoken person with great character. He is very well mannered,” said the former Indian opener.

He is a great player and has won so many matches for India. The way he hangged his boots, bother's all of us. We common people do not know, Why the sudden decission. But the people who know, kindly ask your self is this the way you treat your VERY VERY SPECIAL PERSON.
THE GREAT LEGEND-VVS
Let Laxman's experience is put into best use by our cricket boards in identifying young budding talents in the country.I am sure he will focus more in this direction. All the best Mr.V.V.S LAXman.
Dear Mr.K. Srikkanth, I wish to know whether those who play for nation
and not for a board are greedy of a recognition? As far as my memory
goes, Yourself, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Pullela Gopichand and now vvs
Laxman all fall under a category in which even Sunil Gavaskar, sachin
Tendulkar do not deserve to fall in.
It is impossible to replace the entire package that is VVS Laxman.
He was a great sportsman and more importantly he was a great man and an exemplar
to all the youth.
His devotion to Cricket and his steadfast adherence to spirituality, personal discipline and quiet manners make him a giant. VVS should now focus his attention on preparing India for Olympics.
He should be given an opportunity to guide Indian youth to greatest heights
It would be really very sad not to see him playing anymore for india. Myself Being he biggest fan of VVS, always put him even before the likes of Sachin and Dravid. When he is at crease you just have to hold the nerve to see not just the boundries, but the classy one, which only he can play. He is mentally so strong that despite having some flaws in his technique, he always perform under pressure and that too with indian tailenders. if we think logically then we may conclude that it is because of him that even indian tailenders started to perform. He brings the serenity and trust on the ground while batting that others don't have to worry. In his carreer he might have scored only 17 centuries, but even his half centuries are worthy than many centuries of others because each of them has come when india was yearning for those runs to win mathches.
I respect his decision, but i expect that the team selector's should introspect that why all Of sudden he retires.
I wish him all the best
