Shahid Afridi has been appointed Pakistan captain for the World Twenty20 in West Indies.

Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Nadeem Sarwar announced the appointment on Tuesday.

Afridi had been fined 3 million rupees ($35,200) by the PCB for ball tampering during the one-day series against Australia earlier this year, but the all-rounder was awarded the highest central contract from the organisation last week.

Pakistan selected its 15-player squad earlier this month but had delayed picking the captain.

The tournament runs from April 30 to May 16.

Pakistan is in Group A with Australia and Bangladesh.
