A special effort: Saxena

He is an opener with sound fundamentals. Vineet Saxena was pleased with his century here on Thursday.

“When you come up with a century in a Ranji Trophy final it is special,” said the Rajasthan batsman who plans to add a lot more to his unbeaten 120 on the opening day of the summit clash at Chepauk.

The opener gave credit to his senior partner Aakash Chopra for guiding him during the innings. “He kept talking to me, encouraging me. It was also brave on his part to carry on after being struck by a short ball.”

Asked about the pitch, Saxena said, “It was a rather slow pitch and stroke-making was not easy. The odd ball turned but we knew if we stayed at the wicket, the runs would come.”

Saxena was happy that his hundred followed valuable efforts against Haryana on a seaming track in the semifinal.
