The brothers Amritraj – Vijay, Ashok and Anand – try a spot of yoga at The Hindu’s premises in 1978. The session was part of a photo-shoot for Sportstar.
“We had a very happy childhood, the whole family was close together,” said Anand, reminiscing about the time. “We always used to play together, train together and practise together. It’s quite understandable that we did this yoga session together. This kind of thing probably won’t happen anymore. We all live busy lives in different places. Back then it was all in the same spot, same house. All three even slept in the same room.”
Vijay, who had already made the last eight of Wimbledon (1973) and US Open (1973, ’74) by the time this photograph was taken, entered another quarterfinal at The Championships (1981) and acted in the James Bond film, Octopussy (1983). He went on to become one of tennis’ leading voices. Anand, who teamed up with Vijay to make India a contender in the Davis Cup – with runs to the final in 1974 and 1987 – had a successful stint as non-playing captain, which ended recently. Ashok, who reached the final of junior Wimbledon and played on the professional tour, tasted success as a Hollywood producer.
