Stephen Kiprotich pulled away from two Kenyan rivals in the closing stages on Sunday to win the marathon for Uganda’s second gold at an Olympic Games.

Kiprotich made his move on two-times world champion Abel Kirui and Wilson Kiprotich at the 39-kilometres mark to claim victory in 2 hours 8 minutes 1 second. He picked up a Ugandan flag shortly before the line and kissed it after clinching his biggest career success.

Kirui finished for silver in 2:08:27 and Kiprotich got bronze in 2:09:37 in the classic race over 42.195km in central London.

The only other Olympic gold medallist from Uganda is John Akii-Bua, in the 400m hurdles at the 1972 Games in Munich.
