Surendhar, Kalaivani champions

Loyola (108 points) and M.O.P. Vaishnav (138 points) claimed the overall championships for men and women respectively, at the A.L. Mudaliar inter-collegiate athletic meet here on Friday.

The best performance of the day came from T. Kalaivani (MOP Vaishnav) in heptathlon where she broke a 24-year old meet record, tallying 4500 points. Kalaivani won four gold medals in the event to clinch the individual championship in the women's category.

J. Surendhar with five gold medals was instrumental in leading Loyola to the overall championship and was rewarded for his efforts with the individual championship in the men's division.

G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras gave away the prizes. Also present at the valedictory function were V. Mahadevan, Organising Secretary, K.K. Maheshwari, Secretary, K. Nirmala Prasad, Principal, M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women.

4x100m relay: 1. Loyola 41.8s, 2. MCC 41.8, 3. SCP Jain 44.7. 4x400m relay: 1. Loyola 3:20.1s, 2. AM Jain 3:24.6, 3. MCC 3:39.8.

1500m: 1. E. Mayakrishnan (Loyola) 4:03.2s, 2. P.K. Anil Kumar (Loyola) 4:04.0, 3. R. Vanchinathan (SCP Jain) 4:12.7.
