Despite several protective layers of synthetic surfaces spread over the track and infield of the Nehru Stadium for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, some damage did occur on Sunday.
The first lane of the straight at the midway mark was a portion that was damaged, probably because of the vehicles passing through that area for the purpose of unloading material meant for the stage.
The infield has also been damaged despite the hard rubberised material that was imported at a cost of Rs 12.05 lakh being used to cushion the weight that was put on the ground.
The track has been “cleared” as fit for events, starting on Wednesday, though it would require a further final certification. The Swiss firm, Conica, which laid the track worked through the night into Monday morning to repair the track.
Work was continuing late into Monday night to set right the infield where mud was being dumped to level the field after the removal of the stage. The central opening for the stage used for the ceremony needed to be filled up.
Concern could still be there over the condition of the tunnel and the possible problem it can still cause. Work was progressing to strengthen the sides of the tunnel in order to prevent any further mishap.
The grass is to be re-laid by Tuesday evening after work on the infield is completed. The turf replacement alone will cost the OC Rs 7.73 crore.
