Holders Railways continued domination on the second day of the National Open Athletics Championships by clinching their fifth gold in women’s 20km walk event here.

Deepmala Devi bagged the gold with a timing of 1 hour 47.53 seconds in the 20km walk.

KJ Sandhya of Kerala received the silver with a timing of 1:54.32, while her teammate Supriya Adak got the bronze (2:01.01).

Deepmala, bronze medallist in the Bhopal Open National last year, maintained the lead from the beginning and never looked back during the race.

“I could have done much better but for the hot and humid conditions prevailing here,” Deepmala told PTI after her event.

“There was good competition, but I have also improved my timing,” she added.

The event also witnessed disqualification of Rani Yadav of Railways, who won the 20km in the last edition in Bhopal, after the athlete committed three fouls.

Star-studded Railways had dominated the opening day and captured four gold, five silver and five bronze in nine events on Saturday.

International athlete Renjith Maheshwari, who created a meet record in triple jump on Saturday, was also from Railways.
