International athlete Pinki Pramanik has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for rape, criminal intimidation and other offences in the charge sheet submitted by the police in a district court at Barasat in the State’s North 24 Parganas district on Monday.

Even as questions were raised about the gender of the athlete, according to Additional Public Prosecutor Shantamoy Bose, the medical report that has been submitted along with the charge sheet has concluded that “Pinki Pramanik is male.”

“I have not read the medical report in detail. But from whatever I have seen of it, it says that Pinki is male,” Mr. Bose told The Hindu .

Significantly, while Mr. Bose revealed the conclusions of the medical report to the media, Pramanik remains in the dark about its contents.

Madhab Sanyal, legal counsel of the athlete, had sought a copy of the report more than a month ago but is yet to receive it. “We had applied to the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate seeking the report in September. We have not been provided a copy so far,” he said.

The athlete has also been accused of cheating, fraud, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, as well as cohabitation deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage, he said.

“A copy of the charge sheet will be given to Pinki on November 26, after which the case will proceed,” Mr. Bose said.
