Mayookha misses out despite National mark

March 09, 2012 11:14 pm | Updated 11:14 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Despite setting a National indoor record of 13.95m, Mayookha Johny could not make it to the final of the triple jump event on the opening day of the World Indoor championships in Istanbul on Friday.

The 23-year-old Indian, who also holds the outdoor National mark in the event (14.11m), began with a 13.74 in the qualification round, stretched it to 13.95 next and then fouled her last attempt.

She bettered the National indoor mark of 13.42m set by M.A. Prajusha in Hanoi in 2009. Mayookha also holds the indoor National record in long jump at 6.44m.

Mayookha finished fifth in her group and was tied overall 12th. The top eight qualified for the final, with Yamile Aldama, former Cuban who earlier also represented Sudan, now in British colours, leading with 14.62, her opening jump.

The only other jumper to cross the automatic qualification mark of 14.30m was the defending champion and Asian record holder Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan, with 14.39. Yargelis Savigne of Cuba, a former World indoor champion and two-time World outdoor champion, was the poorest qualifier with 14.09m.

Mayookha is expected to concentrate on long jump qualification for the Olympics. With her National-record breaking effort of 14.11 at last year's Asian championships, she had already qualified for the London Games in triple jump.
