Mayookha breaches 14m barrier

Mayookha Johny became the first Indian woman to break through the 14-metre barrier in triple jump as the Asian GP series concluded in Wujiang, China on Sunday.

The third leg of the circuit saw a better performance by the Indians, with bronze medals coming from Mayookha and Sajeesh Joseph (800m) apart from the now-customary ones from Ghamanda Ram (silver in 800m, 1:49.45) and Seema Antil (bronze in women's discus, 51.45m).

Mayookha's National record that looked like coming the way she started the Asian GP series with two efforts of 13.71 metres, without a medal, in the last two legs, came on her last attempt. That measured 14.02 metres. She had opened with a 13.97m, to better M.A. Prajusha's National record of 13.72m, but fouled her next four attempts before crossing the 14m mark.

On Sunday, she was still behind two Chinese. Xie Limei took the gold at 14.16 while Li Yanmei had the silver at 14.05, her opening jump.
