The South Zone junior athletics championship, which commenced at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Thursday, was mired in confusion.
While the Karnataka State team's entry details, despite the State championships being held just last week, was not completed till late Wednesday night, many sprinters in the boys under-20 and under-18 section could not take part in the heats since they reported to the starter and not at the Call room, as per the norms.
Athletes and even a couple of parents complained but the Chief technical delegate from the AFI stuck to the rules.
Meanwhile, Kerala and Tamil Nadu dominated the day's events. Sujith Kuttan emerged the fastest athlete of the championship, narrowly edging out team-mate M. M. Sreeraj, to win the under-20 boys' 100m in a time of 10.7s.
R. Kausalya and S. Archana, both of Tamil Nadu, claimed surprise wins in the under-20 and under-18 girls' 100m respectively.
Local girl K.C. Shruthi clocked a personal best of 2:15.40s to take home the gold in the under-20 girls' 800m. She later starred in Karnataka's thrilling win in the 4x400m relay.
