Indian weightlifters continued their dominating display in the Commonwealth Championships, clinching four more gold medals on the third day of the competition in Apia, Samoa today.
There were also three silvers medals and a bronze, which took India’s tally to 42 overall. India had won 19 medals, including 13 gold, yesterday, and 15 on the first day of the event.
M Syamlal led India’s charge by winning gold in the senior men’s 105kg category with an overall lift of 339kg (151+188).
Another senior, Chandrakant D Mali, had to be content with a silver as he lifted 329kg (140+189) in the 94kg category.
Nitin Singh Rawat’s lift of 282kg (130+152) fetched him the gold medal in junior men’s 105kg category while Karandeep Singh lifted 277kg (127+150) for a silver.
Pratap Singh Sushmita Singh won a gold after she lifted 148kg (63+85) in junior women’s 75kg category.
In the youth boys 85kg category, Shivam Saini bagged gold after lifting 243kg (111+132), while Deepak also won the yellow metal after he lifted 227kg (107+120) in the 94kg category.
M R Chaitanya managed a bronze for an overall lift of 271kg (124+147).
The Commonwealth Championship is being held for Youth (Boys and Girls), Junior (Men and Women) and Senior (Men and Women) categories simultaneously.
