Hike in grant for lifters

The Union Sports Ministry has decided to increase the grant for food supplement for all power sports, including weightlifting, from Rs. 250 to 500 per athlete per day till the London Olympics.

Operation Excellence

The Ministry has spent Rs. 4.73 crore for weightlifting so far under its ‘Operation Excellence for London Olympics 2012' scheme.

Of this, Rs. 2.78 crore has been spent on conducting National coaching camps for training the core probables. Besides, Rs. 1.95 crore has been spent on international exposure.

No qualifiers yet

So far, no weightlifter has qualified for the Olympics. However, Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) Secretary Sahdev Yadav informed Sports Minister Ajay Maken that three lifters were expected to make the mark in the qualifying event – the Asian championship to be held at Pyeongtaek, Korea, from April 22-30.
