February 18, 2011 03:15 am | Updated 03:15 am IST - RANCHI:

Gurmit Singh created a new meet record in the 20km men's walk, while Sameer Mon and H.M. Jyoti emerged the fastest runners by taking the men's and women's 100m race respectively in the athletics competition of the 34th National Games on Thursday.

Host Jharkhand received its first athletics gold medal through Gurmit as he posted a new Games record of 1 hour, 23 minutes and 26 seconds which was 20 seconds shy of the National record set by Babubhai Panocha at the World championships at Berlin in 2009.

Sameer Mon of Services was sandwiched between Manish to his left and the favourite Abdul Najeeb Qureshi, the event's National record holder to his right. But Sameer ran confidently past the two in the last 10m to finish first in a time of 10.55. Jyoti of Karnataka won the women's 100m race in a disappointing time of 11.84.
