Four new meet records were set in the men's section on the opening day of the 30th Bharathiar University inter-collegiate athletics meet at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.
Praveen Muthukumar of PSG College of Arts and Science sprinted to gold and glory in the 100m with a record time of 10.5s. His effort erased the existing mark of 10.8s set by his college mates G.S. Kalaiselvan in 1993 and later by K.S. Peter in 2008.
Even as Praveen was rejoicing, S.N. Mohammed Salahuddin from the same college quietly created a new meet record in triple jump.
He cleared a distance of 15.41m and, with it shattered the long-standing mark of 14.67m set by R. Arumugam (PSG CAS) in 1985.
Delight for Karthi
P. Karthi did Sri Krishna College of Arts and Science proud with a new meet record in the 800m.
He stopped the clock at 1:56s for the new record. The old record of 1:58.5s set in 1992 stood in the name of Stanley Rajkumar of Government Arts College Ooty.
P. Vishnu of Dr. NGP College of Arts and Science walked his way to a record time of 1:50:04s and took home the gold in the 20km walk.

Off-spinner G. Siddharth (five for 16) bowled a deadly spell as RKS Kalvi Nilayam HSS came back from a rather tight situation to defeat Satchidananda Jothi Niketan by 15 runs in the semifinal of the CDCA under-14 inter-school cricket tournament for the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis Trophy in Coimbatore on Thursday.
RKS Kalvi Nilayam will now take on Mani HSS, which surprised favourite Sri Jayendra Saraswathy Vidyalaya MHSS by 15 runs.

At Udhagamandalam, a fine all-round show by J. Vinoth Kumar (33 & four for 29) enabled Wonder XI Cricket Club score a 61-run win over Mechanics Cricket Club in the TNCA-NDCA second division league for the A.R. Rajoo Gowder Memorial Rolling Trophy at the Lawrence School grounds on Thursday.
