The National Institute of Sports has taken some swift steps to ensure a drug-free environment on the premises. The action was necessitated following a directive from the Union Sports Ministry to curb the menace that saw eight Indian athletes fail dope tests.
The NIS Executive Director (Academics), L.S. Ranawat, in his Action Taken Report (ATR), informed the Sports Ministry that the foreign coach, Yuriy Ogorodnik, had been relieved along with two Sports Authority of India officials attached with the athletes training programme.
Women officials sacked
Two women officials from the Elite Women's Hostel have also been sacked.
Ranawat also informed that an FIR had been filed with the local police against the chemists who had allegedly sold the drugs to the athletes without a doctor's prescription and valid licence.
According to the ATR, the Drug Controller General of India and the State Drug Controllers have been approached for taking necessary action against the chemists.
The Medical Council of India had also been requested to ensure that the malpractices are controlled.

Meanwhile, three athletes on Wednesday turned up at the National Dope Test Laboratory for their ‘B' sample test. Sini Jose, Jauna Murmu and Tiana Mary Thomas were present for their ‘B' sample tests.
The ‘A' samples of Sini and Jauna had tested positive for anabolic steroid methandionone while Tiana Mary had epimethandionone in the in-competition test conducted by National Anti-Doping Agency during the June 11-14 National inter-state athletics meet in Bangalore.
Jauna had also tested positive for the same anabolic steroid in the out-of-competition test conducted by International Association of Athletics Federations at NIS Patiala on May 25.
All of them have been provisionally suspended.
