Kerala and Maharashtra took the lion's share of the medals on the penultimate day of the 26t{+h} junior National athletics championships, as records on the track continued to fall in a heap, at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Friday.

Kerala set two National records in the relay events, while Maharashtra enjoyed its best outing yet at the meet with a haul of seven golds.

Host Karnataka, although overshadowed by its neighbours' might, had some cause for celebration as Meghana Shetty set a new National record with an inspired performance in the under-16 girls' 100m hurdles event. She clocked 14.57s on her way to the gold, eclipsing G. Gayathri's time of 14.70 from four years ago. Another hurdles record succumbed on the day, this time to the efforts of Tamil Nadu's J. Surendhar. The 19 year-old managed to come home in 13.92s, well inside Gurpreet Singh's mark of 14.20.

Maharashtra's Chandrakant Manwadkar added the 1500m title to the 5000m he won on Thursday.
