‘Ajmal and Mendis hold the key’

March 08, 2014 02:48 am | Updated November 16, 2021 07:16 pm IST - MIRPUR:

Saeed Ajmal and Ajantha Mendis will play pivotal roles in the Asia Cup final on Saturday, according to both Misbah-ul-Haq and Angelo Mathews.

“Ajmal has got the variations and the experience to bowl in difficult conditions and difficult situations. Mendis has been bowling really well,” said Misbah on Friday.

Mathews said they were different bowlers who had similar strengths, with “their accuracy and three-four variations.”

While admitting that Shahid Afridi was crucial to Pakistan’s plans, Misbah said there were back-up plans if he wasn’t fit in time. “The replacements won’t obviously be like Afridi, but at least they can do the job for us,” he said.

He also spoke about the pitch’s unpredictability.

“One day you come and it looks like 200 is difficult, the next day it’s a 300-plus wicket. Maybe a new pitch is being prepared for the final. We have to see how it goes,” he said. — Sports Reporter
