Activists of Kanal Samskarika Vedi has come up with a calendar that brings you up to date with all the important theatre festivals and theatre related events in Kerala. In addition, it has indicated the dates on which renowned theatre personalities of Kerala passed away, days on which events in their memory are held, birth and death anniversaries of playwrights and actors and so on. In short, it is for all those who are keen on a date with theatre.

“Santhosh Venjaramoodu, our patron, was the one who suggested we come up with a calendar dedicated to theatre. We noticed calendars that celebrate different themes but there was nothing on drama. At the same time, we have so many reputed playwrights, actors and drama troupes who have made significant contributions to progressive movements in Kerala,” says Hazim Amaravila, an activist of the Vedi.

So they put their heads together and designed a two-page calendar that highlights important dates related to theatre. The activists pooled in money to bring out the calendar and it was released by Culture Minister P. Balan on January 1.

“January 1 is a red-letter day for theatrepersons. It is on this day that Safdar Hashmi was martyred while he was in the middle of a street play. So, we felt it would be apt to release the calendar on that day,” explains Hazim.

As a gesture of goodwill, they have been giving the calendars free of cost to theatrepersons and those involved in theatre in Kerala.

“The response has been overwhelming. We are also factoring in additions requested by theatre activists in North Kerala. Next year, we hope to bring out a calendar with more pages,” he adds.

The youngsters plan to take their calendar to Thrissur to distribute it to participants of the International Theatre Festival of Kerala and later, give it to those attending the Theatre Olympics in the city.
