June 23, 2012 06:14 pm | Updated 06:14 pm IST - Chennai:

A rest room for girl students and women teachers and non-teaching staff built by former students of AJS Nidhi Higher Secondary School, Alandur, was dedicated at a function recently. It was dedicated by P. Chandrasekharan, former secretary of Tamil Nadu Foundation Inc. USA on Sunday last at the school premises.

The alumni came together through a social networking site and formed ‘NAEYAM’ (Nidhi Alumni for Education of Youth and Advancement of Mankind), a charitable trust, and on request from the school authorities, took up the initiative for constructing the rest room. The entire cost of construction – around Rs. four lakhs was completely funded by members of the charitable trust. NAEYAM has also developed a website for the school which was inaugurated by A.K. Damodharan, Secretary, AJS Nidhi Higher Secondary School Executive Committee on the occasion.

Apart from providing basic information, resources, facilities and awards among others, the website: www.ajsnidhi.in also has an ‘announcements’ and ‘students corner’ page which will be maintained and regularly updated by Computer Club members of the school henceforth.

NAEYAM honoured 17 teachers who taught them during the 1980’s. The teachers lauded the former students for their gesture. One of them pointed out that it was for the first time in 33 years of his service that he had seen such an event by former students.

Workshop held

Earlier in March 2012, NAEYAM conducted a workshop on ‘Healthy Mind and Body’ at the school and distributed calculators to students who participated in various cultural programs in the 52nd Annual Day celebration of the school.

NAEYAM, started by 1988 batch students, was registered three months ago and within such a short span, has carried out lot of welfare activities for the school.

It has members (from other batches as well) from all over the world including United States, Dubai, Singapore, Oman and others.

Former students of the school can contact NAEYAM trustee S. Sathish at 94441 70065.
