The Karyavattom campus of the University of Kerala will host the 97th Indian Science Congress jointly organised by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the University from January 3 to 7, 2010.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to inaugurate the Congress on January 3. The focal theme of the congress is ‘Science and Technology Challenges of the 21st century- A National Perspective’.
There are sub-themes on national focus, education and relevant thrust areas like agriculture, biotechnology, energy systems, environmental sciences, medical sciences, space science and technology and transportation. Symposiums based on different sections of science, sessions for science journalists and children, university meet, exhibition and space summit are some of the highlights of the event.
Apart from endowment lectures and plenary lectures, there will be 14 parellel sessions and public lectures. The session for science communicators and journalists will focus on the theme 'Advances in Science Journalism: Role of Space Science and Technology’. A half- day university meet on Science Education is another highlight. The space summit will focus on two areas, namely The Human Space Programme and Chandrayaan-1 results.
While ISRO chairman G.Madhavan Nair is the general president of the Congress, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kerala, A.Jayakrishnan is the co- chair of the apex advisory board. The knowledge partners of the congress include the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, HLL Lifecare Limited, Brahmos Aerospace, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Indian institute of Science Education and Research and Kerala State Science and Technology Museum.
