Indian printer market shrinks in Q2
Data released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) shows that Hard Copy Peripherals (HCP), or more commonly understood as the printer market, in India declined by 4.3 per cent quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter of 2012. However, sales in the second quarter grew 9 per cent, amounting to 8 lakh units.
The second quarter is “generally a weak quarter”, said Nitin Kumar Singh, an analyst at IDC, in a statement. Adwaita Menon, Associate Director at IDC, attributed the dip to poor consumer sentiment. HP retained its status as the market leader, with a share of the 46 per cent of the Indian printer market. Canon was next with a one-fifth share, followed by Epson, which had a market share of 11 per cent. IDC reported that Canon gained in Q2, primarily in the inkjet category.
Serco comes to Shimoga
Serco Global Services, a global business process outsourcing company, which is part of the FTSE 100 index in the U.K., recently announced the establishment of a facility in Shimoga. The facility will offer BPO services to a leading private telecom service provider.
The company said the facility was expected to generate employment opportunities for 450 people by November 2012, and it had already hired 300 people.
Susir Kumar, executive chairman, Serco Global Services, said, “Serco has been steadily expanding its footprint in India and enjoys a predominant position in the domestic BPO market. The launch of this facility strengthens our regional footprint in southern India and further enhances Serco’s India presence to 20 centres, reflecting its commitment to the domestic marketplace.”
The geek ‘unconference’ returns
For the third consecutive time, SAP Labs India hosted Barcamp Bangalore, the technology ‘unconference’ that is widely popular in the tech developers’ community.
Over 500 software enthusiasts participated in the event, which had sessions and hands-on workshops on technology. In its 12th edition, this year’s Barcamp hosted ‘Techlash’, a new session that provided participants with an opportunity to bring their smart and innovative technology solutions to the limelight. In all, 36 sessions were hosted. Ninad Pundalik, a participant at Barcamp said, “The most exciting part of Barcamp is its democratic format, which encourages spontaneous, open-ended interactions, exchange of knowledge and ideas, learning and unlearning the dynamics of various trends. Barcamp makes technology fun, and I make it a point to never miss it.”
Award for healthcare innovation
Wipro GE Healthcare, GE Healthcare’s business subsidiary, was awarded the FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) Healthcare Excellence Award for its efforts to solve maternal/infant care challenge in India. This recognition from FICCI is for GE Healthcare’s innovations to make healthcare affordable and accessible, a press release from the firm stated.
GE Healthcare’s Lullaby LED Phototherapy system was chosen as the best innovation by FICCI from among 120 in India. This system provides a safe, efficient and easy-to-use tool to deliver high intensity phototherapy to treat infants with hyperbilirubinemia or neonatal jaundice. It was developed at the GE India Technology Centre.
