Slow on the uptake
A Facebook page titled ‘InternetExplorer’ has had netizens roaring in laughter at its browser-oriented humour. Now, we all know how Internet Explorer is to the wayside due to its unbearable slow loading and anyone who still uses it is considered archaic.
The page, on that note, recently put out a status ‘ Civil War is amazing!’ after the release of Infinity War . A notable 2016 status is ‘Barack Obama is officially the President of the United States!’ after the announcement of Trump as US President. I wonder if Bill Gates follows this page — or even admins it.
May the 4th be with all
For any Star Wars fan, May 4 was the closest thing to a national holiday. In fact, I have a friend who took the day off — that alone is the extent of the commitment. So some of the fantastic content disseminated across Twitter wasn’t just memes of the laugh-out-loud variety, but tributes of an inspirational one too.
Physicist Brian Greene presented a witty sans-lisp equation about force for the tagline, while the British Army shared a picture, captioned ‘Lighting up the sky like giant light sabres, soldiers exercising in Jordan are taught to use the L12A2 para-flare’. To keep the spirit alive this month, Star Wars ’ official Twitter handle announced a #RoarForChange campaign aiming to reach a $1 million goal in just 24 hours. Those who use the hashtag have to do their best Wookiee roar and each post contributes $1 from the Star Wars team towards funding food packs for children around the world.
I imagine George Lucas thinking, ‘United, we are’... even if he isn’t a huge fan of the newer storyline.
Too young to flex?
For a week now, my social media timelines have been saturated with the name of a viral 9-year-old named Lil Tay, who happens to be Coachella’s youngest performer, which just goes to show social media stardom is a brutal Darwinistic competition.
It’s her braggadocious monologues about her material success that propelled her to fame with over a million followers on Instagram. My first thought is ‘who are her parents?’ as I watch her make it rain with stacks of dollar bills in an empty mansion with Olympic-sized pools.
Her appearance has me baffled, too; she’s an adorable child, and some on Twitter have likened her to Pokemon Jigglypuff, so the contrast with the heavy rap is something fierce. Where’s the line for young kids in entertainment, where so much unsolicited focus on materialism is laid? We’ve witnessed the rise of Bhad Bhabie and Lil Pump, and frankly, it’s terrifying.
Real heroes, not actual size
A newer trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp dropped last week and it’s already garnered over 15 million views across platforms. Boasting a more lighthearted vibe after the emotional rollercoaster that was Infinity War , we’re excited to see Hope Pym take her late mother’s place as The Wasp and Scott Lang being Paul Rudd in a superhero suit.
Ghost, an all-white-wearing enigmatic villain, played by Hannah John-Kamen, seems to be their latest opposition. Saddled with the ability to phase through walls, her superpower seems to be irritating Lang all the more.
And so the plot is set over a ear-drum-quaking remix of ‘It Takes Two’, upping the anticipation.
Rants and ramblings across cyberspace
