Brahmanandam, T. Rajender, Balakrishna and even Rajnikanth were given a break when Alia Bhatt took over.
The Student of the year star acted like a confused school girl during a rapid fire round on a popular chat show, and gave an answer that made her more famous then her debut movie. Ever since, Alia took over as the queen of the spoof world and is still reigning.
But Alia was just a part of the world of internet in India. Another significant event on the net was the birth of short video films which in turn made people wonder at the huge pool of unassuming and talented youngsters in the country. This bunch had an answer to India’s fairness cream crazy customers — Gorey Gote .
You want it fair, you have it. This fairness cream was a spoof on men’s testicular fairness cream and within a day the video went viral. Message delivered with a pinch of salt. But fairness creams are still a rage in the country.
“It was a fun year. More can be delivered in less time through such an effort,” says Karan of Bollywood Gandu
Post Gorey Gote , there were many spoof videos by its maker Bollywood Gandu. The other video from that group that went viral was The Kaurava’s Song . But before that named out all 100 Kaurava sons, it was She called me Bhaiya music video that set the ball rolling. But it is not just spoofs and fun videos that Youtube addicts are hooked on to.
When they aren’t streaming movies or watching them on Youtube, short films with strong messages kept them preoccupied.
The film on sex education in India was brought out at a time when the subject itself was under the scanner. The effort paid off and the movie once again caught the attention of people who mattered.
By the way, it was one of these funny videos or sketch comedy by All India Bakchod (AIB) that spoofed Alia’s low knowledge quotient where Alia herself appeared and convinced the world that she is the smart one after all. This video didn’t overlook the fact that she named Privthiraj Chauhan as the President of India.
But there was no end to the spoofs, funny videos and the ‘gyaan’ camouflaged in them. Funny, short videos also became the medium to promote films and SRK pioneered in it by appearing in The Viral fever’s (TVF) film promo video where he was being interviewed by ‘Arnub’.
The promos for the short video when thus: “TVF presents ‘Barely Speaking With Arnub’ — India’s First Talk Show featuring a host with a Bad Attitude. Watch the Rebel without a pause grill Shah Rukh Khan, an actor, in the First Episode.”
There was another sort of an online craze: The pretentious movie reviewers and the vigil idiot. While the former dissected old movies, the latter did hilarious and matter-of-factly spoken reviews with pencil memes to add to the laughter.
All in good humour, but with gyaan and smart public relations thrown in
