The mother of all mobile industry events, Mobile World Congress is just around the corner, slated to begin on February 27. The four-day long convention which is held at Barcelona, Spain, sees nearly 3,000 media personnel and 1,200 exhibitors congregate every year to experience the latest in mobile technology. MWC has traditionally seen major mobile phone launches which usually predict the industry's trends for the year.
This year will be no different. Here are our top picks for launches that will be big in MWC 2012:
Samsung Galaxy S3
The successor to Samsung's most popular smartie, the Galaxy S2, was expected to be launched at MWC this year, but in a surprise move by Samsung, the company announced that it will not be showing the Galaxy S3 at this year's event. However knowing Samsung's penchant for spawning phones, we might see some Ice Cream Sandwich-running smarties and recent reports have indicated that a Galaxy Note 10.1 with pen input will be showcased.
Sony Xperia S
After announcing its divorce with Ericsson, Sony promptly announced the Sony Xperia S. MWC this year will be the first time the company is showcasing without partner Ericsson, so we could well see some other smartphone launches, notably the Xperia U, Xperia P and Xperia Arc HD
LG
We haven't heard much from LG regarding high-end smartphones in a while but if the fabled X3 makes an appearance, expect a Tegra 3, quad-core, 4.7-inch monster to be unveiled. We've also heard about possible Windows phones from the company.
HTC
The Taiwanese brand which has soared in popularity will also likely showcase a quad-core smartphone, rumoured to be the HTC One X. Some websites suggest that the device will lose the four trademark HTC buttons, feature a 4.7-inch screen and run version 4.0.5 of Ice Cream Sandwich. Other not so powerful phones that could make an appearance are touted to be the One V, an HTC Rhyme like device and the One XL, similar to the Sensation.
Nokia
Although many of us predicted that Nokia would launch the Lumia 910 at MWC this year, Nokia has dismissed those rumours. So instead we could potentially see a European version of the Lumia 900, the Lumia 610 (an entry level Windows phone) and the Nokia 808 PuerView which will be another great camera phone. A couple of Asha phone could also make an appearance.
