Mobile phones sold in Delhi may soon prominently display the level of radiation emitted by them as the city government plans to make such tags on handsets mandatory.
Concerned over possible health issues, the administration will discuss the enforcement of this norm recently issued by central government, an official said on Thursday.
The issue was on Wednesday discussed at a meeting chaired by Delhi Health Minister A.K. Walia and attended by experts from WHO, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Jawaharlal Nehru University.
It also decided to strictly enforce restrictions on mobile phone towers across the national capital and has asked the Centre to frame rules for mobile towers.
Mr. Walia has said that they will discuss the issue with Union Health Ministry and then draft Delhi specific guidelines within the next few weeks.
The Centre has already issued detailed guidelines prepared by an inter-ministerial committee on Electro-Magnetic Field (EMF) radiation.
The Committee has set Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) level for mobile handsets at less than 1.6 watt per kg for six minute and taken over a volume containing a mass of one gram of human tissue.
It has recommended that this information is to be embossed and displayed in the handset and that it should be readily available to the consumer at the point of sale so that one can make sure of the SAR value of the handset while buying a mobile.
The Office Memorandum issued by Ministry of Communications and IT, after accepting the recommendations of the Committee, on November 17 has said provision shall be made for continuous online monitoring and display of radiation level in mobile network frequency range at prominent places in metro/cities.
