For movie buffs, who bank on reviews and ratings before making a trip to the theatre, here are the most favoured apps to keep them in the know…

IMDb: One of the most trusted apps for films, IMDb is the first source for reviews for several smartphone users. If you want to see whether a film is worth watching, you can go to IMDb and view the trailer, see how other critics and film fans have rated it and even view some memorable quotes from the movie.

IMDb has an extensive database of over 1.5 million movie and TV titles, apart from detailed information on celebrities.

Says Narender Kaushik, a movie buff: “IMDb allows me to search through various genres of films. It also creates a database of films based on the list I have searched for. For example, if I view a trailer of The Dark Knight , there is a viewing list created for the rest of the Batman series, which makes it that much easier for me.”

Rotten Tomatoes: This is another favourite, with visitors turning to it every day for reviews of new and old movie releases. The app offers information on each movie, the top box office hits and the latest DVD releases. The site also has colourful screenshots taken from films as well as statistics such as the money it earned at the box office.

Says K. Ravi, a frequent visitor to the site: “I visit Rotten Tomatoes app to compare its reviews with other Hollywood sites. In case of inconclusive reviews, the box office collections that the site displays gives me proof of whether the movie is worth watching,”

IndiaGlitz Movies: India Glitz Movies allows you to watch videos streaming news on the latest movies at any time on your phone. It has reviews of Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. It also has an image gallery of the latest regional films apart from trailers, and is meant mainly for south Indian film buffs.

Suriya Prakash, a young techie, who likes watching movies over the weekend says, “I go through movie entries on Wikipedia which also lists the best movie review sites. Indiaglitz is the first preference for south Indian movies as it gives me detailed and accurate reviews of the latest films, which are the most credible.”

Behindwoods: The app provides the latest news on Bollywood and south Indian cinema. It is a preferred destination for south Indian cinema, with the home page carrying top movie news of the day. It also has the latest movie reviews posted by users and ranks of the top ten movies of the week, top ten music albums, top ten actors and a lot more. It also carries actor interviews, slideshows, movie and song reviews.

Masala movie fan M. Gowtham says, “I depend on this app for reviews of Tamil cinema. The latest news and cinema gossip keeps me glued to the site.”
