Apple has approved a mobile version of the Opera browser as the first non-Apple browser to be allowed on the iPhone, the companies said on Tuesday.
Until now, Apple’s Safari was the only browser that iPhone users could utilise for surfing the Internet, as the company tended not to approve apps that competed with the built-in apps loaded onto the iPhone.
Opera is widely considered the fastest mobile web browser since it uses a special mark-up language to compress web pages, thereby making them load much faster that on rival browsers.
“We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod Touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini app,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software. “This app is another step toward Opera’s goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places.”
