For Indian firms, big data is opportunity
Organisations view big data (large data sets) as a business opportunity rather than an IT challenge, says a recent survey of Indian IT and business professionals conducted by Informatica Corporation. The sample size of the survey was over 200.
Designed to assess the state of big data projects and understand big data strategies, the survey reveals an aggressive move on the part of organisations to master big data for business advantage, with a majority of enterprises (nearly 70 per cent) now taking on big data projects, a release from the company states.
The survey also reveals the diversity of big data and its breadth of opportunities and challenges.
When asked which aspects of big data are relevant to their organisation, most Indian respondents cited the management of growing transaction volumes (58 per cent), indicating that there are still significant challenges even in the more traditional enterprise data realm.
IEEE to host first cloud conference
IEEE Cloud Computing, an initiative of the world’s largest technical professional association, has announced its first-ever cloud conference in India. The two-day IEEE Cloud Computing for Emerging Markets Conference will be held in Bangalore on October 11 and 12. The event would focus on challenges and opportunities for emerging markets, a release from the IEEE stated.
The conference would offer a mix of invited talks, high-level panel discussions and peer-reviewed papers with a distinguished array of personalities from industry, academia and government, the release said.
Microsoft AppFest sets a Guinness record
Developers at the Microsoft AppFest made history recently by setting a Guinness record with 2,567 developers coding non-stop for 18 hours.
Developers, who came from all over the country, participated in the event hosted by Microsoft, building, designing and testing applications for the Windows platform.
Paul O’Neill, vice-president, Guinness World Records Commercial, announced Microsoft’s entry into the Guinness World Records for the ‘most participants in a software development marathon in one location’.
Bhaskar Pramanik, managing director of Microsoft India, said, “This Guinness Record at Windows AppFest is a great accomplishment by all developers who participated. Over the course of the 18 hours of the Windows AppFest, we saw some outstanding talent and many innovative apps being developed.”
A user conference on manufacturing
Leading manufacturing companies from across the country participated in the MSC Software’s annual user conference held here recently.
The conference focussed on bringing the user community together to explore the development of new engineering methods that could help manufacturers come up with optimum design solutions.
These solutions, according to a release, were aimed at helping Indian product manufactures deliver more innovative, cost-effective and environment-friendly products that can compete in the local and global markets.
