And thus, with Plus, Google owns us whole.
That is, of course, only one way of looking at Google's labour of over one year, when the team guys sat writing codes, eager to make as big an impact in the social media sector as in the mail, search, photo and document storage domains.
This time, they were also hoping to do one better than Orkut, which was literally steamrollered by Facebook in popularity and functionality, and certainly better than its disastrous Wave. The idea, one supposes, was to create a product that would make a mash of its prime competitors Facebook and Twitter and wipe them out. Will Google + do that?
Google + is still in its snooty, exclusive, I-will-call-you-don't-call-me phase, but let us remember that was Mark Zuckerberg's strategy initially as well. Facebook was the privy of exclusive Ivy League schools in the U.S. and the U.K. until the blitz happened. So, invitations are still scarce to come by, not all those in the Plus can extend invitations to friends who are still nonplussed. However, for sure, there are many more being added to my circles every night, nearly thrice the number than I started off with.
But when you are in, you may not notice this; it automatically signs you in on a secure (https) server, significant if you consider the recent controversies over Facebook taking liberties with users' privacy. So far, so good.
Even if you missed that, there is no way you cannot pause at the nearly spartan, neat, user interface. As yet uncluttered in comparison to FB, and only four silos (Home, Photos, Profile, Circles) to click on. Yeah, no games, and thankfully, no Farmville! On the face of it, it is simple; yet, it takes some initially to figure out the Google +. The ‘Stream' is the equivalent of FB's scroll newsfeed, and there are similar options — to share, edit, host photos and videos, and delete them. You can also ‘mute' those annoying conversations on your Stream. Phew! There is also the ‘Sparks' component, which according to Plus, “…looks for videos and articles that it thinks you'll like, so that when you're free, there's always something to watch, read and share.” Your grandpa will approve, it adds, but who is looking for Grandpa's approval rating on social media?
What is utterly out of the box for social media is the ‘Circle' concept. Literally, you can create your own social spheres, including friends, acquaintances, colleagues and contacts in different circles that are more than faintly reminiscent of school-level Set Theory. You can choose who you want to share specific information with, hiving off various groups that may be in conflict with each other: a boss versus someone to whom you are bitching about him.
A thumb tack aids you to transfer multiple persons on to the circles; and every circle you delete merrily jigs away out of the screen. Will subsets of intersecting Venn diagrams soon come to play, where diagrammatic impressions mapping friends who belong to more than one circle? It certainly will jazz Plus up. ‘Hangout' is Google's version of ‘teleportation,' a.k.a. ‘video chat' and is certainly cool thus far.
Mobile Google Plus is adapted finely for Apple's iOS and is functional on the Android platform (tried on HTC phones), but does not deign to work on the Symbian platform (tried on two of Nokia's E-series). Snooty again? Because even as the migration to Android or iOS gathers steam, there are still millions of users on Symbian, and everyone knows the link between Twitter's phenomenal growth and the facility of mobile phones.
Even if you are in, there is the fact that Plus is about a week old. Though social media is turning out to be the natural hyperbole of human communication, it is frustrating that updates will have to be done separately, since Google currently offers no integration with FB and Twitter (though a patch is available only on Chrome). Google’s domination of your life is also upsetting if you think of it. Ergo, for now, Google Plus remains, at best, a tantalising and yet, brief dalliance outside of marriage.

That's what they said with google buzz.
Literally steamrolled? Did the steamrollers flatten the server room?
I hope it works this time
I know that there has been a lot of work put into this, and I hope it repays the laborers for their time.
Google wants to dominate which ever field it chooses. Besides there is nothing wrong in its attempt to compete facebbok. But google ignoring symbian is its own loss.
This will make facebook the new myspace
If I have to decide whether I should stick to the 'Facebook' or should I move on to the new social networking website 'Google+' or should I just keep them both? My answer will be, Impossible to choose only one. Reason is facebook has been around for a longer time and We have all our friends using it right now. G+ will take some time to become popular enough that all of my friends will jump on to it. I will say probably by the end of this year I should have half of my friends on G+ and It's not really about Google+, It is about the better social networking site. So in next few months we will see dramatic changes in Facebook services and also G+ will try to solve all the kinks out of their plus. Once G+ establish their way to become a 'Facebook killer' competition in these two will get more interesting. So we will see a lot of new interesting services offered in these two giants of social networking giants in upcoming months. And we will choose who's worth it? Facebook or Google+ !
Feeling great to see Google plus........
Hope it will leave back all social sites and give us a lot of privacy too..........
Google + is amazing........ then facebook
Good news
This is so nice
Two issues:
A concerte one:
"...secure (https) server, significant if you consider the recent controversies over Facebook taking liberties with users' privacy...": This is technically incorrect.
Switching to https does zilch to saving the user from the privacy issues of the kind you mean. It just means that you are now safe from some one else snooping on the wire between you and Google. The data still goes the same, and Google can breach your privacy the same way you mean Facebook has in the past.
A more abstract one:
"...Google + is still in its snooty, exclusive, I-will-call-you-don't-call-me phase, but let us remember that was Mark Zuckerberg's strategy initially as well...": Not quite the same. "The Facebook" at least covered a very large fraction of your friend 'circle' by covering a whole Ivy college at a time. In wave-g+ approach, you promise yourself to come back when it opens up to all your friends you want to be in touch with, encouraging the churn rate.
Its features are very advanced in comparison to other social networkin sites.
Although I've not tried out Google+ yet but it is all hype right now. Even Google Wave was supposed to revolutionize the way we use internet/email/IM but it didn't happen. Similarly, I don't think Google+ will be any bigger hit. But still, I'm waiting how Mark Zuckerberg reacts on this as Facebook would definitely undergo some changes to fight its new rival.
We need the innovativness and are crazy about the google plus.
I hope it will become the most powerfull and popular social networking

The only attractive feature is the circle concept in it. Hope, google makes the plus one best social networking and not a "toy" like what orkut was.
Hope google plus is real with real names, real images and mainly comes under the meaning of "social networking".
I tried google+ but it dint give me one reason to switch from facebook. And while signing up there was a checkbox(already checked) asking if google can use my information to target ads on non google websites.I hate that much intervention in my private life. I am gonna delete my account.
i think it's the best
They are copied completely facebook style just changed the names like freind to hangout and groups to circles. This is not expected from google.
we are waiting for the new generations great social networking site which should be greater then all others.........
Hope google+ satiates our desires.Wish this hype proves its worth in the social domain..A bit disheartening that this so called phenomenal site is not adapted for the ordinary mobiles.

Good to see that Google is doing something to give a heavy competition to Facebook n twitter.
Very well written Ramya, I actually do believe this will be a hit on facebook and might do to facebook like they did to myspace. I look forward to testing it and seeing the variety of tweaks that it has.
I hope it will become the most powerfull and popular social networking.Good job by google.
I don't think Google plus will make any effect on Facebook...Because the likeness of people is towards the Facebook rather than Google..actually Facebook as now being used for marketing.so i don't think people will make as much as their networking on Google plus..also it will make a Effect on Google When Facebook will launch their search engine...
I sincerely hope that Google+ would have more user controls than FB has at this time. I have deleted my FB account for a long time now because of privacy issues and also because I really got angry that I cannot delete the account rightaway but only deactivate it and then it takes 2 weeks to delete. What the heck!! Moreover even if I search for my name in google images even now, my FB photo is still there. Lastly we should not forget about Zuckerberg's past history of hacking accounts and other unethical behaviour in his Harvard days. I really don't trust this guy and his team.
Hope + will not annoy as Buzz used to.
I believe Facebook will bite the dust if they don't evolve. Feel free to read my blog to understand various limitations of Facebook and comment. Search for Krishna Shastry Open Pages in Google and look for following article: Evolution, War and More – Social Networking Sites. I am unable to paste the link here. However, I have joined Google+ 2 days back and all is not well.
When Orkut and FB were around, I signed up for Orkut since everyone in India was on it. Then suddenly everyone moved to FB for whatever reason...so I moved to FB...now G+..crazy crazy

First of all the best.. I hope it will become a powerful and popular social networking. We need creative ideas from this.
@Doug, I second. FB Stream rolled Orkut literally? Oh yeah? And no fire occured?
I've been using Google+ and I like it. I just hope friends are invited soon. Will it beat down Facebook? Time will tell.
Who's going to use it? For it to have any market, people have to be annoyed with Facebook. I don't know a single person who dislikes facebook. I'm betting everyone on the beta are all die hard technies and app developers. The massive core userbase of facebook uses all of 3 feaures: posts text, posts photos and posts links. Facebook does all perfectly. Google+ has a serious uphill battle. I don't see a single thing in their offering that would make anyone go 'oh wow, I should leave facebook for this'.
There is no native application for Plus in Symbian, but you can access it from your mobile browser. There are two modes here... one is "Basic Mobile" and another is 'Mobile'. You can access Google+ in the 'Basic Mobile' from any mobile browser that supports HTML. but this mode is a bit basic; you can't even see who are there in your circle. I tried Basic mode in Opera Mobile and UC-Browser. 'Mobile' mode won't open in these two browsers. But luckily, the 'Mobile' mode does open in the Symbian's Native browser, but is runs very slow.
I think G+ will move over as official social media space.
I really hope G+ now rolls out Facebook. Its high time now and FB has become a big bore!
I joined G+ a week before and I'm already liking it. I hate FB for 2 reasons. * Every Tom, Dick and Harry in the friends' list writes too many status quotes too frequently and * there are many "Find Single girls around your area" type of sick ads.
G+ is same as Facebook. I don't think it will create an impact. More chances of getting the same results as Buzz and Wave.
