Q&A

May 14, 2018 01:26 pm | Updated 01:26 pm IST

I have recently had an IUD inserted, but I find that the odour of my vaginal discharge has changed; it smells fishy now. Is this something I need to be worried about?

The IUD sits inside the uterus like a foreign body with the threads inside the vagina. Therefore, vaginal infections may ascend via the threads into the uterus, causing infection of the uterus. Also, irregular and heavy bleeding, which sometimes occurs due to the IUD, increases the chances of vaginal infection. Do check out anything that is not the norm with your gynaecologist.

I find myself extremely depressed and grappling with intense anxiety and crying jags for an entire week before my periods. What do I do, as it affects work?

Everyone knows about premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that encapsulates a whole range of changes, ranging from mood swings and exhaustion to food cravings and breast tenderness. Some women also experience what is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which is an extreme form of PMS, with spells of severe depression and anxiety. Try and avoid alcohol, which could be a trigger. Also, eat healthy, avoiding too much sugar or taking in too little salt.

Do what gives you comfort, such as a little extra sleep. Continue to exercise, though you may want to switch from very vigorous forms to a gentle walk in a park. If you find that you’re not seeing any change, you could check in with your gynaecologist. Often supplements help, and sometimes low-dose oral contraceptives are prescribed, but please don’t self-medicate.
