The World Health Organization says road accidents are the leading cause of death for youths from age 5 to 29.
WHO says in a global report released onTuesday that nearly half of the 1.2 million people killed on the world’s roads each year are pedestrians, bikers and motorcyclists.
It says more than 90 per cent of the fatalities occur in developing nations and that in some poorer nations, four-fifths of those killed in road traffic are 'vulnerable road users' not in cars.
Up to 50 million others a year are injured in road traffic, the report says.
The report is based on 2008 data and is called the first broad assessment of road safety in 178 nations.
