Frequent nightmares could hint at stress disorder

People who are plagued during the day with traumatic memories and nightmares at night could suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, according to Ulrich Frommberger from the German Association for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.

It could also be that the affected individual seems lethargic, indifferent and doesn’t seem to have a normal range of emotions.

Those people also sleep poorly, are irritable, struggle to concentrate and can be skittish.

In addition to duration of more than four weeks, another part of the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder is that the patient is no longer efficient in important areas of life. It results from traumas such as serious injuries, natural disasters, experiences of war or conflict or violent crimes. The affected individual is no longer able to handle what they have experienced and feels helpless and defenceless.

They are treated especially with a trauma-focused psychotherapy.

The patient learns among other things how to control their undesired recollections, break down accompanying symptoms such as fear and depression, and accept the trauma as part of their life.
