Want to stave off diabetes? Eat slowly, says a new study.
Researchers at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences have found that people who wolf down their food are two-and-a half times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who savour their meal.
This is in line with previous research that found links between eating quickly and obesity. But it is the first time that the speed at which people eat has been identified as an independent risk factor for Type 2 diabetes.
For their study, the researchers compared 234 newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes patients to 468 people free from the disease. The participants were quizzed on diabetes risk factors and asked to rate their eating speed. Body weights and measurements were also taken, the ‘Daily Express’ reported.
After adjusting for other factors including a family history of diabetes, exercise habits and smoking, the researchers found those with faster eating habits had a more than two times greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
Lead researcher Dr. Lina Radzeviciene said, “The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is increasing globally and becoming a world pandemic. It’s important to identify modifiable risk factors that may help people reduce their chances of developing the disease.”
Type 2 diabetes, which normally develops during middle age and is associated with obesity or an unhealthy lifestyle, is a largely preventable disease that can be controlled through a healthy diet and exercise, even if an individual finds it a struggle to lose weight.
Dr. Radzeviciene’s team now hopes to perform a larger study looking at how types of food, calorie intake, exercise, and psychological and emotional well-being affect diabetes risk factors.

This article is nice one and then, comments given by all people are useful. Thanks.
Very simle but effective solution. The Hindu should come out to propogate this
message among the common masses.
Sir,
In calcutta, the street culture of eating food.... Footpath poori stalls supply 2 poories in a plate/leafy bowl. you eat and throw. people in general don't ask for next round. Simple living and you can find more old population here at Calcutta.
Eat less and by this be healthy and contribute /give something to the hungry/poverty ridden India.
Or eat only 2 times instead of three meals a day.If you can eat 5 Idlies eat only 4. always less to your stomach and be active.
Very simple, practical, and scientific solution from Mr. Rizwan. In our new found economic growth, the last part of leaving 1/3rd free may be hard to digest (pun intended) for a lot of us. The amount of food we order and waste at restaurants these days is disgusting to say the least. The other less known dietary influence on type 2 diabetes is vegan food. Going vegan, and eating oilless food can even reverse the condition, and many people have taken this route and are able to eat all the delicious fruits they were told to miss, without fear or worry. A stress free life is also directly responsible for warding off type 2 diabetes.
Islamic tradition requires food to be eaten with three fingers - the thumb, index and middle fingers. This forces smaller quantities to be put into mouth. Also, the norm is to fill 1/3 with food, 1/3 with water and leave the other 1/3 free.
The old hindu tradition says to eat slowly so as to live healthily. I
think now the research confirms this. People laugh at older generation
when they advice the younger ones to avoid fast food and to eat slowly and
without the distraction of TV , mobile etc
