Roving medical service For many in remote parts of the United States, who are often uninsured and find health care prohibitively expensive, some of their options to have access to medical care are at free, “pop-up clinics”. Remote Area Medical (RAM), a volunteer medical relief corps, is a force behind some of these clinics that provide care that includes “dental and vision work”. After venturing to work in countries with less developed medical systems, RAM began getting calls to hold clinics in the U.S. Founded in 1985 by Stan Brock, it has held over 700 “RAM expeditions” across the U.S. It estimates that over $75 million has been given away in care, with 85,000 volunteer staffers, including doctors, dentists, glasses-makers and administrative staff.
