Close on the heels of the DVD on “Vegetarian Cooking for Diabetes”, come two more DVDs on “Vegetarian Cooking for Heart Diseases” and “Vegetarian Cooking for Weight Loss” that will arouse the interest of the health conscious.

What is ideal body weight? It should be within the prescribed Body Mass Index. A higher BMI indicates overweight which makes it difficult for an individual to perform routine chores. It also puts him or her at risk of developing several diseases, The 49-minute DVD in English on “Vegetarian Cooking for Weight Loss” provides medical advice and inputs for a balanced diet with a demonstration of four recipes — whole wheat pasta with broccoli, tomatoes and garlic; multi grain mixed vegetables roti; multi grain upma with sprouted ragi; and sprouted green gram and multi grain porridge with fruits.

Poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking and pollution are generally the causes of heart disease, the incidence of which is on the rise. Diet, especially one which is high in cholesterol, is a major contributor. The presence of cholesterol in food by itself is not unhealthy so long as it is at the required level and conforms to the type that is medically acceptable. The 36-minute DVD in English on “Vegetarian Cooking for Heart Diseases focusses on the preparation of various vegetarian dishes which are rich in fibre/nutrients which keep cholesterol in check and therefore, help, reduce the risk of heart ailments. The recipes demonstrated are steamed brown rice and broken wheat with vegetables; mixed vegetable ragi kolukattai; mixed vegetable idli; and oats with fruits shake.

The DVDs have been produced by Super Audio (Madras) along with Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad, and Apollo Hospitals, Teynampet, Chennai. Directed by Gopinath, the script and recipes are by Triveni Chandraprakasam, a doctoral research scholar.
