Are food supplements such as protein powders a waste of money? On the contrary, research indicates that they do have tangible health benefits. According to one study reported in Muscular Development, nutritional imbalance, especially protein deficiency, hampered recovery of bone fractures in several elderly persons. The study covered a group of people recovering from fractures who were given a protein supplement containing 20gm of protein for six months.

This was in addition to their regular diet. The group that received the supplement showed less bone loss, improved serum concentration of IGF and decreased stay in rehabilitation homes.

The findings demonstrate that protein supplements are beneficial not only for the youth but also the aged.
