With a steady increase in the number of A(H1N1) influenza cases being reported from across the country, homoeopaths suggested preventive treatment.
At a meeting of the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH), chaired by Diwan Harish Chand, vice president of the governing body of the council, it was recommended that homoeopathic medicine arsenicum album could be taken as a prophylactic against flu-like illnesses.
Dosage
Prescribing arsenicum album 30, one dose (4 pills of size 30 for adults and 2 pills for children) daily, on empty stomach, for three days, the expert group said the dose should be repeated after one month, following the same schedule, in case flu-like conditions prevail in the area.
The group also suggested that stringent general hygienic measures be taken.
The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) has issued special precautions for pregnant women.
Avoid travel
They have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, and stay away from hospitals unless necessary.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that 7-10 per cent of all hospital admissions for swine flu are pregnant women in their second or third trimester of pregnancy.
Precautions
Precautions to be taken include using masks, keeping a safe distance from coughing patients and consulting a doctor in case of any symptoms.
The FOGSI has cautioned that antenatal appointments that monitor the child's development should be duly attended, even during a flu-affected pregnancy.
Tamiflu is not normally recommended because the effects on the unborn child are unknown.
