The College of General Practitioners of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) would soon offer advanced teaching programmes for specialist doctors to update their knowledge, said T. Sadagopan, president, IMA, Tamil Nadu.
Speaking at the third annual convocation of the certificate courses conducted by the College of General Practitioners (CGP), a wing of the IMA, Dr. Sadagopan said the certificate courses conducted by the CGP currently were meant for general practitioners to update their knowledge on specific disciplines. “We will soon introduce advanced teaching programmes for specialists too,” he said. The intention of the CGP in conducting the courses was to help physicians update their knowledge, Dr. Sadagopan said.
Getting recognition
M.S. Ashraf, past national vice-president, IMA, said the association was looking to get recognition for the certificate courses offered through the CGP from some university. Maintaining professional competence requires life-long learning and doctors have to constantly update their knowledge. It was with this objective that the IMA was conducting the certificate programmes.
Dr. Ashraf also emphasised the need for doctors to promote awareness among the public.
He also called upon doctors to energise themselves with fresh knowledge so as to guard against frustration and monotony of the daily routine. M. Ponnavaikko, Provost, SRM University, offered all support to IMA's programmes.
Doctors M. Chenniappan, Vijay Viswanathan, N.Ganapathy, N.Mohandas and Ramakrishnan, coordinators of the courses in cardiology, diabetology, toxicology, nephrology and critical care explained the objectives of the programmes.
