The recent launch of Google Glass marks the rise of a wearable computing revolution. Unlike its handheld ancestors, Google Glass is light, easy to use, can be worn all day long and has an augmented reality display device.

Wearable computing technology has been around for quite some time. The most popular example is digital watches. However, the ascent of mobile devices with anywhere access to the Internet, has bought this concept back to life.

As the exploration in this space continues, different players are working hard to deliver a multitude of functions in their wearable devices. Though competitive pricing will be a defining factor in choosing a wearable device, here are five features one must look for:

Ergonomic, easy to use

For the success of an innovative product, it must not only serve the real purpose but also be easy to use. Wearable devices, in particular, must be ergonomic, light, easy to use, and preferably water resistant.

Longer battery life

While we can never get enough battery power, it is imperative that for success and popularity, the wearable device has longer battery life. Along with a fast processing capability, the wearable device must be able to run on minimal power utilisation so that the device can be functional for longer hours.

Mobile app ecosystem

As the wearable computing revolution twines in with the current reigning mobile revolution, having the right set of applications is important. The wearable device app ecosystem must comprise applications that deliver an augmented reality experience.

Data security

Vendors must have data security features that not only physically guard the device from strangers but also guard the information as relays. Two factor authentication, secure cloud access, secure browsers and secure mail applications must be some of the prime security considerations.

Hands-free monitoring

As our smartphones replace our wallets and become our Swiss Army knives,it becomes imperative that our wearable device talks in real time with our phone.
