These Olive Ridley hatchlings have a helping hand

March 16, 2018 05:59 pm | Updated May 29, 2018 02:09 pm IST

Every year, newly-hatched Olive Ridley turtles emerge from shallow nests on the beach and slowly crawl towards the sea.

The babies need to get to the sea on their own, using the moonlight as their guide. However, there is a chance that they turn elsewhere for guidance. The city's bright lights disorient them and they end up crawling in the wrong direction, often to their deaths. But the newborns along Chennai's Neelankarai beach have help. Members of the Tree Foundation India, a charitable trust, relocate the eggs from near the waterline for the turtles' safety.
