Tripura forest guards have given protection to a group of deer that strayed in from the forests of Bangladesh through the unfenced border.
Abortive attempts
Forest officials alerted the guards after poachers made abortive attempts to kill the animals.
The group was spotted at Aliamara in south Tripura, on the edge of the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.
“Local villagers noticed the movement of at least two huge deer in the area before we got information,” a forest official said from Sabroom by phone on Monday.
He said the deer belong to the sambar species, the largest in South Asia.
They reached Aliamara after crossing river Feni.
Forest guards had been pressed into service to protect them.
Last month, forest officials rescued a Bangladeshi deer which was trapped in the barbed wire fence in Khowai, west Tripura.
