As the mercury touches new highs in the Capital, burning the bone under the skin, people pull out all stops to keep their cool; literally as well as metaphorically.
The camera captures an enterprising woman balancing an umbrella in one hand and a desert cooler in the other, which she has presumably just purchased from the market and is transporting back home.
The photograph manages to poignantly convey the traditional role of women as homemakers who ‘carry the load’ of not only housework and keeping the fire in the kitchen ablaze but also of going to the market, making purchases and ensuring the comfort of all in the family.
When an independent woman is around, everybody else conveniently depends on her to bear the burdens. Despite the recognition that a homemaker’s job is round the clock, it remains unsung and unpaid.
