The rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Satluj, Beas, Godavari and Kaveri are among those that have been undergoing a conservation exercise lead by the Ministry of Environment and Forests for the past three years.
The government has release Rs 1088.91 crore to States under the National River Conservation Plan (NCRP) till date. This is for abatement of pollution in identified stretches of various rivers across the country.
Sewage treatment capacity of 4704 mega litre per day has been created in the country under NRCP so far, informed Jayanthi Natarajan, the Union Minister. “The water quality, in terms of Bio-Chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) values, where works have been completed, is reported to have improved at most of the locations, as compared to the water quality before taking up pollution abatement works,” she said.
The Yamuna, Ganga, Gomti, Ramganga, Damodar and Mahanadi have attracted the maximum funds in the past three years.
