Uttarakhand-based Himalayan Chipko Foundation, working for protection of trees in the region, will get the International Green Apple Award at the House of Commons in London tomorrow, the NGO today said here.

The award is being to the Foundation for its exposure of the Hak Hakook scam in Uttarakhand in which thousands of trees were cut on the pretext of providing wood to villagers whereas all the wood was sold by the timber mafia in the black market, Foundation president J P Dabral said in a release.

Himalayan Chipko Foundation has also been invited to International Green Heroes, an elite group of environmental achievers who use their experience to support related cause around the world.

The Green Apple awards began in 1994 and attracted more than 500 nominations this year.

The Awards are organized by the Green Organisation, an independent, non-profit environment group to recognize, reward and promote best environmental practices around the world, the release said.
