Google’s Android operating system now has 1,00000 apps available for users in its online market, Google announced Monday in a Twitter posting.

The milestone comes almost two years since Google launched the Android market, and as the Android smartphone operating system fast gains ground on the iPhone.

However, it still has a long way to go if it wishes to match the estimated 2,80000 separate apps that are available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

According to a New York Times report on Monday, some 2,70000 developers are now working on apps for Android—powered phones, which are now selling at the rate of 2,00000 per day around the world. The report said that the number of apps available had tripled since March.
