May 4: The Labour Party loses heavily in general elections in Scotland and Wales.
Experts from 120 nations endorse a report by the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and ramp up use of technologies that do not emit greenhouse gases.
May 5: The Labour Party loses power in Scotland in a historic election defeat bringing to an end its 50 years of political dominance.
All 114 persons, including 15 Indians, aboard a Kenya Airways Jet bound for Nairobi are killed after it crashes in a mangrove forest on the outskirts of Douala town in Cameroon.

May 11: East Timor Prime Minister, Jose Ramos Horta, wins presidential polls.
May 12: At least 41 persons are killed and over 100 injured in Pakistan’s Karachi city following a bloody showdown between supporters of President Pervez Musharraf and ousted Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary.
May 16: Nicolas Sarkozy is installed as the sixth President of France’s Fifth Republic established in 1958.
May 17: The French President Nicolas Sarkozy names Francois Fillon Prime Minister.
North Korea unfurls “a new curtain of peace” by running a train through the demilitarised zone near Kosung. South Korea reciprocates. The rail link was disrupted during the 1950-53 Korean war.
May 18: The World Bank President Paul D. Wolfowitz resigns ending a furore over favouritism.
Algeria’s ruling coalition wins parliamentary polls (held a day earlier) with reduced majority.
Rachida Dati, a woman of North African origin is named French Justice Minister. Former Defence Minister, Michele Alliot Marie, gets Interior and Bernard Kouchner gets Foreign Ministry.
Kazakhstan’s Parliament votes to allow President Nursultan Nazarbayev to stay in office for life.
May 20: Jose Ramos-Horta is sworn in as East Timor’s second President for a five-year term.

May 30: The U.S. President George W.Bush names Robert Zoellick to replace Paul Wolfowitz as World Bank president.
Thailand’s constitutional court bans deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from politics for five years and orders disbanding of the Thai Rak Thai party founded by him, for electoral fraud.
